All Right Now

Evening peeps!

I have spent the last couple of weeks in a flurry of activity. Being a mammy, working, cleaning, living, thinking, procrastinating, glorifying being busy, not really being busy, wondering if my time management skills are up to scratch, organising birthdays, counting down the return to school, more cleaning, more procrastinating, dodging the laptop as the inspiration to write deserted me, more work, no time, go-go- go, catch up, fall behind, panic, moan, run, clean, mop, shop. All the while forgetting to breathe. And tonight, I have stopped. I’m just here, in the right now, enjoying this fleeting moment in time.

Luckily enough, I have taken my own advice for a change and have channelled my inner Einstein. We are back to my friend George’s email, and Albert Einsteins life lessons. The lesson that I need to heed today is ‘Focus on the present –I never think of the future, it comes soon enough.’   Thanks Albert, and as usual, you are right.

I can’t speak for all of you, but I find myself at times thinking  ‘When I do this, I can have X’, or ‘When that’s done, I can then move on to doing Y’ – which is a normal train of thought. What I am forgetting is that if I just sat with the here and now instead of focusing on tomorrow, time management wouldn’t be an issue. We spend our lives making memories, which is great – but do we appreciate the memory more than the actual moment?

I may have read this in a book somewhere, but imagine life to be like driving at night. The road behind you falls away into the darkness, and the road ahead is lit by the headlights… good enough image, it makes sense. However, I feel sometimes that maybe we focus too much on the lights approaching in the distance, the junction that we need to take, or indeed our destination to the detriment of the moment right then and there. The feeling of your butt in the seat so to speak, or that song on the radio. You are in that car alone, and for that split second, you are the only person on the planet in that place on that journey. That says a lot. Henry Miller had a point when he said ‘Ones destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.’

That is what I’m going to try to practice from now on. Just enjoying each moment as it comes. No expectations. No binding and exacting plans as to how my tomorrow should be. I’m just going to be here, now. Mr Worry, Mr Fear, and Mr Regret are the biggest enemies to keeping your head in the present

‘ Let go of the past and move on.’ they say.

‘ Accept the past and forgive yourself and others!’ I reply.

There is a difference. Did I mention Mr Judgmental? Tell him to take a hike as well. Be kind to yourself, especially your younger self – most of the time we have tried our best.  You might have messed up. That’s Ok – you are a mortal being after all. If you keep making the same mess, then you need to have a chat to yourself. Break the cycle.

In a moment of stress, a friend telling you to take deep breaths may just push you over the edge, nevertheless it is sound advice. Nothing can bring you back to the present quicker than focusing on your breath. Essential to life and it sure does give your overworked brain a moment to bring a bit of clarity to a situation.

The other bit of advice I would offer you is, get rid of negative thoughts and people. I remember heading to a gig once in Dublin with a friend of mine, and her friend who I hadn’t previously met. Thirty minutes into the journey, the stranger turned to me and said ‘Jesus woman, If this is how you talk about yourself when you are in good form, I wouldn’t like to hear what you call yourself in bad form’  Now, she was a bit forward and I was taken aback by what she said but in hindsight, she did me a favour. She was the catalyst for me to increase my awareness about myself and what I put out to the world. Watch your thoughts about your own self; become aware of them, and ask yourself if you would ever talk about your family, children or friends in such a dispirited and indeed disrespectful way. Give yourself a break, and a hug. Be kind to yourself for goodness sake.

Stop comparing everything. Material trappings and possessions are just an illusion. We all arrived on this planet in the same way, and we will all leave the same. If you have the capacity to feel empathy and be kind, then you are rich. Not taking yourself too seriously helps too.

At the end of the day, we are all human and in the majority of cases we are all good. We are loved by someone and we love back. Stay in the here and now, do one thing you love everyday and let tomorrow arrive when it’s supposed to. Today will always be a good place to be, and this very moment in time will never happen again. Enjoy it. x

To think tomorrow’s thoughts.”

I hope you did just one thing that made you smile today. If you didn’t, then do it right now.

Love and positive thoughts to you

I’m coming home Newcastle

Evening Peeps! I’m back.

Its been a while since I have posted, but I do have an excuse- A sojourn in the beautiful city of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Since my last post, the boy wonder has reached the ripe old age of one, the mischief maker is on the count down for a return to school, I have returned to work and in the same day got a puncture and sprung a leak in the bathroom. Thanks to a mammoth spring clean yesterday, I had some free time today and spent the whole afternoon in bed with a cup of tea and a book- Luxury and such a rare occurrence!

If I wasn’t Irish, I would happily be a Geordie! My lovely Dave is from the Toon, hence the visit. 8 day spent with family, making memories and having fun. Life really doesn’t get much better than that.

The city of Newcastle is truly beautiful. if you haven’t  been, you should put it on your bucket list. Its a major city, but it doesn’t feel like that at all. I have never experienced a more friendly and cheerful place to stay, and that is a big statement, considering I’m from Ireland, where we pride ourselves on a warm welcome and hospitality. Anyway, this is not going to read like a trip advisor review, but for fun, here are a few random facts about the Toon that you may not know!

Well firstly, we stayed in the Royal Station Hotel. Its located right in front of Central Station, and less than a ten minute walk from the main shopping area and beautiful Grainger Town. Just to give you a wee bit of a history lesson, Grainger Town gets its name from Richard Grainger, a builder and developer who is said to have  ‘have found Newcastle of bricks and timber and left it in stone’. Over half the buildings are listed as grade 1 & 2. I could rave on all evening about the architecture and the conservation projects, but I’ll stop myself! Check it out online, the history of the city is really interesting.

Back to the Royal Station Hotel- I would certainly recommend the Hotel as a place to stay. It too is a listed building, the hotel was first opened in 1850 by the Queen herself, and it has seen many a famous face come through the doors over the years; from Laurence Olivier to Muhammad Ali. Rumour has it that one of the corridors of the hotel is haunted by the spirit of a little boy who was lost in a fire. There has been reports of sightings, and the story goes that he likes to hop up on the back of unsuspecting guests for fun.

One of the most charming features in the Hotel are the two massive chandeliers in the stairwells. I can only imagine how much they weigh, but the last time they were taken down and cleaned, the job took a full six weeks to complete.

You cannot mention Newcastle, without making any kind of reference to the Toon Army, the Magpies, Newcastle United and the beautiful game. The boy wonder has a claim to fame in that his great great Uncle on his grandmas side was on the panel that led the toon to their first league championship in 1905- A Mr J Bell. Maybe one day the boy wonder will wear the number 9 on his back.

The only other reference I will make to football is in relation to the World Cup of 1990- ITALIA 90- wohooo, the green army. The only time the bunting flew in force in Ireland, the nation was hooked on the beautiful game, and the beautiful Jack Charlton was, and indeed still is a national hero. He was the man that took us for the only time to the quarter finals.I was twelve, and I can still remember the hype, until Schillaci broke the heart of the nation, slipping one past Packie Bonner. It was the first time I saw grown men cry and Italia 1990 will live in the memories always.

Jack Charlton is from Ashington, just outside Newcastle and one day I will meet him. I actually had the good fortune of meeting Packie Bonner once. I was star struck, right back to being a little girl and I couldn’t speak. He is either well used to 30 odd year old women looking like a hare in the headlights in his company, or he just thought I was nuts.

My other heros are Dave and Si of The Hairy Bikers fame. I love love love them, and one day I will meet them too. What you may not know about the boys is that Dave is a professional make up artist and Si worked as a locations manager on Harry Potter!! Try their ” healthy” pies- using pizza dough instead of suet pastry. A taste sensation!

Enough about football and food and back to a few more “did you know” facts about the Toon.

Did you know that…….

Ridley Scott the director of Alien, is a Geordie….. Well technically hes from South Shields, but who’s arguing.

Mr Bean is a Geordie! Rowan Atkinson is from Stocksfield. My friends mam dated him back in the day and to this day, she has never met a funnier person.

Get Carter with the fabulous Michael Caine was filmed in Newcastle.Surprisingly the only accolade it ever received was a 1972 Bafta nomination for best supporting actor.

Chas Chandler- a Geordie music producer, discovered the legend that is Jimi Hexdrix.  Rumour has it that he busked on Chillingham Road.

Windscreen wipers were the invention of a Geordie by the name of Gladstone Adams. He was on his way home from a match at the time 🙂

Mark Knopfler and Sting. Enough said.

So in conclusion, Newcastle rocks. In a place where Ketts are sweets, cigarettes are called Tabs, if you are looking for a toilet, you ask for the netty, if you want a real sandwich, gan on and get yourself a ham and pease pudding stottie. Whey Aye Man!!

Thanks Newcastle for all of the above, trains,Gazza and my very own Geordie Dave!

I hope you have had at least one day recently spending time with loved ones and making memories. If you haven’t, for what ever reason, get planning x

Back to more positive thoughts and Albert Einstein tomorrow night, but until then, love and best wishes to you all

P.S…. for any lovely Toon people, history buffs, music buffs, film buffs or football fanatics reading this blog, please don’t crucify me if I have got any of the random facts less than completely accurate. At the time of learning and writing these facts I had the cat, the boy wonder and the mischief maker swinging out of me. Please feel free however, to add your own random facts about the beautiful city x
